The munitionsschlepper .Pz.IV uses its winch to offload a 2.117 ton concrete piercing shell, which can penetrate 2.5 meters of concrete or 4 meters of armor plating.

At a height of 3.05 meters the loading winch sets the shell down onto the glide rollers of the automatic loader. Only one-eighth of the shell is pure explosive. The round is 2.5 meters long.

Before and after each shot the 28 ton barrel is thoroughly inspected to see if the 112 rifles with a total length of 5.068 meters has suffered any damage.

The mortar is ready for firing. the ammunition vehicle has driven off, the crew has left the gun. Each barrel has a life of no more than approximately 60 shots.

The heaviest German Mortar - during firing. The cylinders of the barrel counter-recoil are clearly visible. Firing is initiated electrically. The recoil pressure is 700 tons.

Two special trucks which suspended the mortar between them on cantilevered beams. A pair of jacks was used  to lift the mortar into the traveling position.
