"kruz Bruno" SK L/40 Kanone Eisenbahn
This 1936 Programme gun was
one of the series of four of the same calibre that differed principally in
barrel length and were named accordingly in barrel length and were named
accordingly; this was the shortest of the four.
The gun was the 28cm SK L/40 naval gun mounted in a ring cradle with the
hydro pneumatic recoil system underneath.
The mounting was of much the same design as that of the 24cm Theodor
Bruno, suitably enlarged; a box girder structure into which the gun was
trunnioned. Folding platforms and handrails were fitted and the assembly
was mounted on two ten-wheel bogies. A limited degree of traverse was
available by moving the mounting across the rear bogies bolster, but the
gun was usually emplaced on a portable turntable. Eight guns of this type
were built and issued in 1937-8.

"lange Bruno" SK L/45 Kanone Eisenbahn
The second of the 1936
series of 28cm guns, this had the long barrel and was thus called lange
Bruno. The ordnance was the 28cm SK L/45, another ex-naval weapon. Only
three weapons were built in 1937.
The mounting was the same as that used with the short model, a box girder
body riding on two ten wheel bogies. The lange Bruno was slightly lighter
than the shorter kurz Bruno, because although the barrel was longer it was
also of thinner section.

"Schwere Bruno" L/92 Kanone Eisenbahn
The third 1936 gun in 28cm
calibre heavy Bruno was based on the ordnance of the 28cm Kusten Kanone
L/42, a weapon that had been superseded in coast defense but two of which
were available from old stock. The mounting was the same as that used for
the other Bruno guns, and the two equipments were built and issued in
1938. |

"Bruno neue" Kanone Eisenbahn
In the spring of 1938, while the earlier series of
Bruno guns were reaching completion, the army reviewed their performance
and deciding it was insufficient.
After studying the designs Krupp replied that, since the army had
specified that the programme was to be completed by 1939, modification
involving the design and manufacture of new barrels could not be done in
the time. The army accepted this and instructed Krupp to proceed with the
design of a new equipment, the delivery date for which was not finalized.
Eventually three weapons were manufactured : one delivered in
November 1940, one in July 1941 and the last in February 1942. It had been
intended to build more but the better performance of the 28cm K5 (E),
together with a ballistic irregularity that defied solution, caused the
project to be cancelled after the third delivery.
